Turmeric is a powerful spice that has been said to have over 50 healing actions so it may be the one single herb that you won’t want to ignore.
Turmeric is from the ginger family and native to southern Asia. It is a kitchen staple in India and found in many of their dishes.
To make turmeric powder the rhizomes are boiled and then dried in a hot oven. After drying it is then ground into a powder that has a deep orange yellow colour. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin which is rich in antioxidants and has great anti-inflammatory actions. In order to increase the bioavailability of turmeric so our body doesn’t flush out all the health benefits, black pepper is needed for maximum absorption. A little fat is also key because turmeric is fat soluble and needs a little fat to make it past the stomach, into the intestines and then into the blood stream.
Turmeric is a key spice in many curries however it can be used on its own or combined with other spices like cumin, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, chili powder, garlic and more. It is nice to add a pinch to scrambled eggs or rice, add it to smoothies or soups, mix with some olive oil and toss on vegetables or to make roasted potatoes.
