Cooking With Tea: Take Your Favourite Loose Leaf Tea Beyond the Cup

Cooking with tea distinctly tea meta

Tea has always belonged at the table. But it doesn’t have to stay in the teacup.

At Distinctly Tea, we love a beautifully steeped cup of loose leaf tea, but some of our favourite flavours can do so much more. Tea can become the base of a refreshing summer drink, add depth to a cocktail, flavour a homemade syrup, or bring something completely unexpected to a recipe.

That’s the idea behind our Cooking With Tea series: simple, delicious ways to experience loose leaf tea differently.

Sip it. Mix it. Cook with it.

Tea Is an Ingredient — Treat It Like One

Think about everything that goes into a loose leaf blend: tea leaves, fruit, herbs, flowers, spices and natural flavours. When those ingredients are steeped, they create layers of flavour that can be used much like an infusion in cooking.

The key is simple:

Always steep strong!

When tea is being combined with ice, fruit, juice or other ingredients, its flavour can quickly become diluted. A stronger infusion helps the character of the tea remain part of the finished recipe.

Once you start thinking of tea as an ingredient rather than only a beverage, there are all kinds of possibilities.

Three Delicious Ways to Start

For our first Cooking With Tea collection, we chose three recipes that show just how versatile loose leaf tea can be.

🍐 Pear Sangria — Fresh & Fruity

A refreshing summer sangria featuring Pear Cream Green & White Tea, juicy pear and bright, fresh flavours.

Make it with wine for an easy summer cocktail, or use white grape juice for an alcohol-free version everyone can enjoy.

It’s light, beautiful in a pitcher and made for summer gatherings.

🥭 Fiesta Mango — Bold & Spiced

This one brings some attitude to iced tea.

Our Fiesta Mango Black Tea combines black tea with mango, florals and chili for a tropical tea with a little heat. Serve it over ice with a spiced rim for a bold summer drink, or turn it into a cocktail for entertaining.

Sweet mango, citrus and spice make this anything but an ordinary glass of iced tea.

🍓 Strawberry Tea Syrup — Sweet & Versatile

Tea becomes something completely different in this recipe.

We steep Strawberry Cream Black Tea strong and combine it with real strawberries to create a rich, fruity homemade syrup.

Use it to sweeten iced tea or lemonade, stir it into sparkling water, drizzle it over pancakes or ice cream, spoon it over yogurt, or add it to cocktails and mocktails.

One little jar opens up a surprising number of possibilities.

From Sweet to Savoury

And these three recipes are only the beginning.

Loose leaf tea can work beautifully in marinades, glazes, syrups, baked goods, poaching liquids, sauces, salad dressings, cocktails, mocktails and desserts.

Herbal and fruit blends can bring sweetness and brightness. Black teas can contribute richness and depth. Green and white teas offer lighter, more delicate flavours. Spiced teas can transform a recipe with very little effort.

You don’t need complicated techniques or special equipment. Start with a tea you already love, steep it stronger than you would for your everyday cup, and experiment.

Make a Little More of Summer

Set the table. Steep the tea. Invite someone over.

From a slow breakfast in the garden to an afternoon pitcher shared with friends, summer gives us plenty of reasons to enjoy tea a little differently.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more ideas for sipping it, mixing it and cooking with it.

Because sometimes the best thing you can do with a great tea is take it beyond the cup.

Always steep strong!
