Red, Green Rooibos and Honeybush Tea

Do you know the difference between Red Rooibos, Green Rooibos and Honeybush Tea?

Red Rooibos has a deep red infusion. It tastes naturally sweet with a hint of nuttiness. It has no caffeine, is low in tannins, high in antioxidants and contains many minerals including iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, fluoride to name a few. Rooibos is not a true tea because it doesn’t come from the actual tea bush. It comes from a small bush that grows in South Africa and has thin needle-like leaves. The leaves are a green colour on the bush but change to the red colour after oxidation. Some studies have shown that some health benefits of drinking Rooibos are that it may help with insomnia, nervous tension, mild depression, stomach cramps (including colic), constipation and allergic symptoms. It may also help ease itching and skin irritations.

Green Rooibos is the most natural state of Rooibos because the leaves are picked, dried and packaged. No other steps are taken so the leaves remain a green colour.

Honeybush is a cousin to Rooibos and gets its name because its flowers smell like honey. It tastes very similar to Rooibos but has a slightly sweeter taste and with more body. It is also caffeine-free and it too is rich in antioxidants being processed the same as Red Rooibos.
